Visit Herff Farm to connect to the past, present and future of living in harmony with the land.

Herff Farm is a gathering place offering public events, community gardens, a Farmers Market and hiking opportunities. It also serves as a natural laboratory for sustainable modern living—a place where children and adults learn how to protect our precious natural resources.

Historically significant and protecting an irreplaceable freshwater source, the Herff Farm is a vibrant hub that provides access to outdoor learning for children and a model for land stewardship for the greater community.

Exploring Herff Farm

Herff Farm Homestead

Purchased in 1854 by German Ferdinand Herff, the 10,000 acre Herff Farm was one of Boerne’s first settlements by European immigrants. Today, the Herff Farm keeps our past alive on 60 acres at the confluence of the Cibolo and Menger Creeks. The Homestead is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

We want to thank the Pat and Tom Frost Foundation, The Summerlee Foundation, and Texas Historical Foundation for supporting restoration projects for the Historic Herff Farm Homestead.

Historic Barn

The historic barn is a rustic gathering space for school groups, events and programs, complete with interpretative displays of the historic farm. The back doors open to the community amphitheater with a beautiful meadow backdrop.

Community Amphitheater

An extension of the historic barn, the amphitheater accommodates educational and community events and fosters opportunities for student and community programming in an intimate setting.

Learning Village at Herff Farm

This central courtyard is surrounded by The Nest Nature School, historic barn, community gathering space, and an amphitheater. People of all ages will gather for learning opportunities from preschool classes to adult workshops and community gatherings.

The Nest Nature School

Our preschool campus provides a rich learning environment for children ages 3-5 built on a unique place-based curriculum that incorporates play, social-emotional learning and core learning skills, all immersed in the beauty of nature.

Gardens

The Inspiration Garden, Teaching Garden, Children’s Garden and Pollinator Garden are designed to inspire others to get out their trowels and get into the garden! Created with the help of many experts and dedicated volunteers, the gardens can show you what is possible to grow and thrive in this area of Texas using organic gardening methods and native plants.

Sustainable Living Education

Students and adults learn sustainable living techniques including farming, gardening, beekeeping, and water catchment, all while providing wide-open spaces to simply enjoy the outdoors.

Hiking Trails and Wildlife Corridor

Home to native prairie grasses and a bird sanctuary, the Herff Farm offers a variety of walking and hiking opportunities for hikers of all skill levels.

Volunteering

Volunteers of all ages and experience levels are welcome to help out at the Herff Farm. Depending on the season, volunteers can help with mulching, weeding, planting, harvesting, winterizing, and even chicken care. Volunteering Monday-Friday needs to be coordinated ahead of time. Please contact volunteer@cibolo.org.

Second Saturday Volunteer Days are a great way for new volunteers to get to know the Teaching Garden, learn to tools and techniques, and find a project they love! Click here to learn more!
